The Physical/Educational Divide

It seems readily apparent to me that this job is actually two jobs – each of which could be better handled by people with experience in those areas. The first job is the physical maintenance and upgrading of the SLC SEED Center. This could be a full-time job in the warm months. Included in their duties would be: - Maintaining the gardens (weeding, watering). - Mowing and trail maintenance. - Checking the electrical and water systems. - Working with contractors and volunteers to build new buildings and upgrade existing ones. - Teaching workshops.   The second job is running the Sustainable Living Coalition itself, a non-profit educational entity designed to empower individuals and communities through sustainable practices. Jobs include: -...

Internship GO!

Hello Academics, Administrators, Friends and Random Internet-ers - I’ve officially started my internship position as Assistant/Manager/Director of the Sustainable Living Coalition here in Fairfield, Iowa.  I’m a bit over my head as far as responsibilities go, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out. I moved my computer into the SLC SEED Center Building, which means I’m now blogging on Solar and Wind Power! I’ll be working here most every day, except weekends (for the most part). My office is located on the second floor as the SLC Building, and my office hours are 1:30-4:30 weekdays. Feel free to stop by! I can also be reached at RonKhare @ gmail.com and 641.455.9707  - My internship is over when school starts again, around the end of...

The Democratic King

[NOTE: This was my first and final draft for my Philosophies of Sustainability class. I had to cut about 9 pages of notes to get under the 10-page limit. It's not really up to my standards for papers or publishing, but I hyped it a bit as I was writing it, so I'm putting it online as-is for general improvement of civilization. - Ron] The Democratic King   How the transfer of power to a new system of accountable monarchies may be the only viable method to create a sustainable civilization.   “Reformers have the idea that change can be achieved by brute sanity.” - George Bernard Shaw The Parameters of the Problem / The Need for Change Complete Worldwide Topsoil Erosion and Infertility in 42 to 84 years.1 Half of the world’s forests are...

American Farmer (GF)

[This is one of my posts from Growing Freedom, my old blog on the trials of trying to start your own sustainable garden/mini-farm with almost no personal experience. This was originally posted on Apr 27, 2009] from “How To Grow More Vegetables” - “One mini-farmer may be able to net $20,000 to $40,000+ a year on a 1/8-acre mini-farm. He or she might work a 40 hour work week and take a 4-month vacation each year.” When I heard this for the first time, my jaw dropped. First, straight-up, that’s more a year than I’ve ever made – and I’d have all the fresh free food I could eat, too. In fact, that sentence was the reasons I started this whole mini-farm/garden in the first place. How could I pass up the chance to make...

Deer Fence #3 (GF) (Video)

This is one of my vlog posts from Growing Freedom, my old blog on the trials of trying to start your own sustainable garden/mini-farm with almost no personal experience. As implied, this is the third video in a series in which I desperately try to keep animals from eating my garden. I estimate, despite the fences and meshes and all the rest, that I lost about half of my food to critters. Get Volume 1...
