Bad Reviews
It’s been out for over a year now, and has received good reviews. In fact, that’s all I’ve gotten… good reviews. Some rave reviews, some “it’s ok” reviews.
I’ve yet to receive a bad review, and it’s driving me crazy.
It’s easy to to think that this is a good situation – after all, it means I’m a good writer, right? In a very bland sense of the word “good” yeah, I guess it does mean that. But it also means I can fade into the background, that there’s nothing noteworthy to stir the emotions beyond the general optimism presented. To my knowledge, every single person who has read it has enjoyed it.
I feel like a failure. Am I really so vanilla that, at my most screaming-radical doom-saying, I’m nothing more than a nodding head in the crowd? That my most cherished visions of the future are nothing more than “that’s a good idea, you should go for it”?
I swore off trying to rectify my writing, but I feel now, at this point, that everyone who has a copy should toss it in a fire, and I’ll try again. My second book… ahh…
my second book. Maybe this time I can do something interesting, point a mirror on the ugliness and ignorance in the reader by revealing it in myself.
Or maybe people will read it and go “wow, I never thought of that. good job!”
AARRGHHH!!

Your book sucks.
Does that make you feel better?
I guess I should have made a point about constructive criticism.
WHY does it suck?
I'm about to read your book. Because your offering it as a download and then pay what it's worth thing. So I'll have to wait to give constructive criticism. However, if you want to know how to write in a way that burrows into your brain like an insidious alien brain eating slug and won't get out. There is no better series I've found than Jed Mckenna's enlightenment trilogy. That shit is more incendiary than just about anything else I've read. In a good, get off your ass because your going to die soon way. In a what he is saying is unavoidably clear and obviously true and yet I've been trying to avoid it way. read it. you'll see what I'm talking about. That'll have to do till I read yours.
